Film Nights in Amsterdam
Second Wednesday of the month will be FILM NIGHT!
September 7: Windhorse. In Tibet, nothing is more dangerous than the truth. Windhorse is a gritty and evocative film about the horrors Tibetans face today, beautifully constructed by Paul Wagner. Unlike many propaganda-based movies, the protagonists in the film don't really succeed in their goals and dreams of freedom, and like the Dalai Lama, are forced to leave Tibet. The actors, all of them non-professionals, do a great job in conveying the message of freedom in native Tibetan and Chinese languages. Filmed on location, the cinematography, involving both the spectacular Himalayan mountains, the colourful marketplaces of Tibet's capital Lhasa, and the pervasive nature of Chinese surveillance, is illustrated in a powerful manner.
October 12: Kundun, the Martin Scorcese movie about the early life of the 14th Dalai Lama Told through the eyes of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, ‘Kundun’ chronicles his early life, from his recognition and childhood through the Chinese occupation and his journey into exile. The film charts his extraordinary growth into a figure who raises the world’s consciousness about the Buddhist society of the spirit, the plight of Tibet, and the sufferings endured by his people with unspeakable grace and dignity.
November 9: Die Salzmänner von Tibet, a beautiful documentary by Ulrike Koch Four men from a nomadic Tibetan tribe undertake their annual, ritualistic pilgrimage to a sacred salt lake. Salt gathered in this traditional fashion will be sold to provide the economic livelihood of the tribe for the coming year. The journey, necessary for the group's survival, also incorporates a number of rituals necessary for their culture to survive in the modern world.
