The Practices of Patience & Wisdom: Geshe Sonam Ngodrup

Online only

Taught by Geshe Sonam Ngodrup, translated by Ven. Khedrup

On these evenings, Geshe-la will teach from two texts: Shantideva's Way of the Bodhisattva and the Heart Sutra. These texts complement each other in that the Heart Sutra is about the wisdom aspect of the path and Way of the Bodhisattva Patience Chapter is about the method aspect of the path.

The Bodhisattva Practice of Patience

To become a bodhisattva, a being capable of bringing lasting benefit to others, practitioners train in what are known as the six perfections or Pāramitās - generosity, ethics, patience, effort, concentration, and wisdom. The third of these, patience, is a challenging practice but one that can transform not only our relationships with others into something more positive, but also a tool that contributes to a more peaceful mind. Geshe Sonam Ngodrup will share these instructions based on the great Indian master Shantideva's famous text, Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra). Students are welcome to participate in all or some of the sessions, and each session will include guided meditation.

Wisdom that Sees Things as they Are: An Accessible Presentation of the Heart Sūtra

The Buddhist path promises liberation from suffering and a stable and lasting happiness. But how is this actually achieved? To a great extent, through understanding the way things really are, which allows us to challenge our mistaken perceptions. To understand the way things are, one must realize the empty nature of phenomena - their lack of inherent existence. This realization is the foundation of liberation and enlightenment, and therefore one of the most important practices of the Buddhist path. The Heart Sūtra is a scripture of the Buddhist canon that lays out the way to meditate on emptiness and achieve the understanding of how things really are. Geshe Sonam Ngodrup will present this text in an accessible way and guide meditations based on its contents. His course on the Heart Sūtra at Maitreya Instituut Loenen was one of his most popular, and students appreciate his accessible approach to understanding the sometimes challenging teachings on emptiness.
