City weekend on Emptiness and Compassion

with Ven. Losang Gendun

Join us for a weekend exploring the intersection of emptiness and unconditional care.

On Saturday, through meditation and teachings, we'll examine how the foundational teachings of the Theravāda tradition hold that the healthy development of sustainable care rests on an understanding of the empty and selfless nature of beings. Wisdom gives us the inner balance to reach out to others through the four immeasurables—equanimity, appreciative joy, loving-kindness, and compassion—while honestly acknowledging our limitations.

On Sunday, we'll extend these reflections into a Mahāyāna understanding, where insight into the empty nature of all things becomes the ground from which arises the wish to become a buddha for the sake of all beings. We'll explore in particular how, far from undermining bodhicitta, the view of a groundless reality is its supreme support—and the highest basis for ethical life.

As always during our topical weekends, there will be ample time for questions and discussion, as well as the simple enjoyment of one another's company over lunch.

On Saturday, Ven. Gendun will teach the regular IDMT-class, as part of the weekend.

More information will follow soon.
