Discovering Buddhism - module 6: All about Karma

Awakening the limitless potential of your mind

with Annelies van der Heijden

Onsite and online

Looking at Buddhism from the outside in, it might feel like standing at the shores of a mighty ocean, trying to come up with a question that makes sense. Where to begin?

If you want help and guidance in exploring this ocean of wisdom, we can offer you the program Discovering Buddhism (DB). In this program we give participants an experimental taste of the Buddhist teachings and skills that help to make their lives more meaningful. This program will provide you with a solid footing in the practice of Mahayana Buddhism.

After finishing a complete round of Discovering Buddhism (DB) in March 2022, we’re very happy to now engage in a new DB cycle. Feel very welcome to join us in this precious journey!

Discovering Buddhism (DB) on Mondays: 20:00 – 21:30 hrs (both onsite and online)

How it Works

Discovering Buddhism modules consists of teachings, discussions, meditations and practices, assessment questions, and practice retreat mornings. Students may do some or all of these components of each course, as they wish and are interested. Those who complete all the components receive a completion card for that module. The modules do not need to be completed in order and students can join at any time, except for module 12 and 13. For these modules prior DB knowledge or otherwise is required.

In total it is a two-year, fourteen-module series that gives the student a solid foundation in the teachings and practices of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism.

Module 3: Presenting the Path

Get an overview of the entire Tibetan Buddhist path to awakening. Hear about the life story of the Buddha and study the basic teachings of Buddhism. Discover the unique system for putting Buddhist philosophy into practice contained in the lam-rim, or “graduated path to enlightenment.”

Monday: 20.00 - 21.30 hrs, January 23 – February 20 (5 classes)

Module 4: The Spiritual Teacher or Mentor

Take the time to investigate the role of the teacher or mentor on the spiritual path: the need for a teacher, the qualities of a teacher, the different levels of teachers, the qualities of a student, and how to relate to a teacher for greatest benefit in one’s spiritual life.

Monday: 20.00 - 21.30 hrs, March 6 – April 3 (5 classes)

Module 5: Death and Rebirth

Explore the process of death and rebirth and its impact on how we live our lives. Be guided in skillful reflection on the meaning of death and what to expect at the death-time. In this way, fulfill your purpose in life, resolve conflicts, and develop the skills to help both yourself and others at the time of death. Eventually, through Buddhist practice, one can overcome uncontrolled death altogether.

Monday: 20.00 - 21.30 hrs, April 17 – May 15 (5 classes)

Module 6: All About Karma

Learn the essential facts about the law of cause and effect and generate a clear understanding about how karma works. Discover effective tools to accumulate merit - the cause of happiness and success - and purify mistaken actions done in the past. In addition, explore ways to become adept at dealing with life most effectively and thereby take control of your future.
